When the beautiful game turns ugly

FRANCISTOWN: They call it the beautiful game but it turned ugly at halftime when supporters threw missiles to the pitch during the high-profile Coca-Cola Cup quarterfinal clash between hosts ECCO City Greens and Mochudi Centre Chiefs at the Francistown Stadium on Saturday. It took about 10 minutes to calm the situation.

While on the field of play, the players tried hard to keep the crowd entertained, a moment of madness from the security guards caused an eruption at the break. The guards attacked a Chiefs' official who had gone back apparently to collect a cooler box, which was left at the team's bench.

Information reaching Mmegi Sport indicate that the security guards were told to stop the Chiefs' official because he was suspected to be carrying muti. Hell broke loose when one of the security guards hit a Chiefs' official with a baton and the supporters responded by throwing missiles. As match officials were still trying to calm the situation, another Chiefs' man took the bottle, which was said to be carrying muti, ran to the southern goalposts and sprinkled something into the goal. This did not go down well with ECCO supporters who started hurling missiles. Calm returned after 10 minutes. After the game, ECCO supporters threw missiles at Chiefs' players who were taking a lap of honour after winning 5-4 on penalties. It is understood the 'war' between Chiefs and ECCO started on Friday night at the stadium and police officers were called in to restore order. "Every time we play Chiefs, there is a problem because they always want to enter the stadium at night to perform their rituals and it is bad," said an ECCO official who wanted to remain anonymous.
