Weightlifters prepare for Youth Games in SA

FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Body Building, Weightlifting and Fitness Federation (BBWFF) will send 10 youngsters to South Africa next month to prepare for the forthcoming Africa Youth Games.

The weightlifters will be camping in Cape Town to train with the South African elite team at a high performance centre. They leave for South Africa early next month to prepare for the second edition of the Africa Youth Games to be hosted in Gaborone in May 22-31, 2014. The young weightlifters were chosen after a talent identification exercise last weekend in Gaborone. Last weekend, over 40 aspiring weightlifters thronged the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) gym in Gaborone to try their luck during an identification exercise conducted by South Africa-based Africa Youth Director, Aveenah Pandoo.

“Our target is to have a team that will compete at next year’s Youth Games,” said the BBWFF secretary general, Alex Rankgwe. He said the federation plans to have as many camps as possible to fully prepare the weightlifters for the games.
