WASBO Launches Third Regional Branch

MOGODITSHANE: The Women and Sports Botswana (WASBO) launched its southern branch in Mogoditshane last Saturday, the third since the organisation was revived early this year.

WASBO has already launched regional branches in Maun and Francistown. At the Saturday meeting, Mogametsi Kowa was elected chairperson with Thelma Khunwane as her vice. Masego Pilane is the secretary while Keenese Katisenje is in charge of marketing and Dear Ramajalwa will take care of finance.

Speaking at the launch, WASBO assistant chairperson Basadi Akoonyatse said women in sports face problems ranging from societal to physical. She encouraged women to always soldier on to make sure that their rights in sports are respected. She said it is naturally expected that a woman should stay home and take care of children and that they are not fully accepted in sports. Some of the physical problems that she said women in sports face are hormonal changes due to menstruation or pregnancy and child bearing and care. She said these changes deter the progress of women in sport. She complained that in the past, women were not given enough media coverage like their male counterparts though the situation has improved. She stated that there was a myth that women athletes who are physically vigorous cannot bear children.  She pointed out that there is a growing concern that women do not support each other. The new regional chairperson, Kowa, thanked the voters for the trust they have put in her team. She promised that they will not disappoint. She appealed for support from all stakeholders.
