The national rugby team, the Vultures have climbed four places up the International Rugby Board (IRB) rankings released on Monday.

The team moved to position 77 in the World from 81 following a dream start in the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Five Nations tournament underway in Gaborone. The Vultures beat Zambia 23-15 in the opening game. The team had also warmed up with victories over Matebeleland of Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Before the Sunday match, Botswana had played Zambia five times and only beaten them once. As a result of the defeat, Zambia slipped one place down to 76. Nigeria, who lost to Mauritius stayed in position 91. Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) president, Bob Lekan was excited with the development. He said although the Vultures have not done well in the past, they managed to stay at number 81 for sometime. He attributed this to good management. "It shows that our investments in the team is bearing fruits," Lekan said. Botswana face Mauritius in a do or die match on Saturday and Lekan believe they stand a chance to win and qualify for the World Cup. Botswana will however, bank on Nigeria beating Ivory Coast today.
