Volleyball team leaves for World Cup qualifiers

The national men volleyball team leaves tomorrow for Cairo, Egypt for the African qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup. Botswana is in a tough group with Tunisia and Nigeria and hosts Egypt.

The Egyptians are ranked top in Africa followed by Tunisia while Nigeria are 12th. Botswana is rated 63rd in the continent. Despite difficulties that Botswana went through in preparing for the qualifiers, assistant coach Kabo Ntshinogang is upbeat that they will do well. Ntshinogang said some players were not released in time for camp, which affected preparations. He said they were forced to cut short their camping period due to insufficient funds. He said they wanted to leave earlier to play practice matches against countries neighbouring Egypt before the tournament but they failed due to shortage of funds. Botswana has been to the qualifiers before but failed to win a single match.

Ntshinogang acknowledged the tough competition that awaits them but said even if they do not qualify for the World Cup, they aim to win at least one game. "We know it is not going to be easy but we will fight to our best ability," he said.
