The newly elected Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) president Thari Mooketsi has said staying far away from the capital city Gaborone will not derail his efforts to steer the association to new levels.

Mooketsi took over the hot seat after beating former president Moses Bantsi, Zambia Champi and Seitshiro Matlala in last weekend's elections. He said though a lot of events are centred in Gaborone staying in Maun will not stand in his way of running the association properly. "I am not going to be running the association alone because I have a team," said Mooketsi. He added that he would also take advantage of technology to communicate with his team. The thrust of his leadership will be consultations with different stakeholders, he says.

"I want affiliates to understand that athletics belongs to us all not just the executive committee," he said. The new athletics boss said his priority would be the welfare of athletes and other stakeholders. "Development for both athletes and managers is also important," he said. He observed that there has been a huge gap between affiliates and executive committee members, hence the committee took advantage of member ignorance and did not do things the right way. "Iam not going to be leading ignorant people and iam going to make sure that they are developed," he said.
