Troubled BAA holds crucial meeting

In the wake of allegations of cheating during the February elections, the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) special meeting tomorrow is expected to be stormy.

The meeting is scheduled for Cresta President Hotel in Gaborone at 8am. It has been called after protests by clubs that the elections were not fair. Last week, Selebi-Phikwe Athletics Club, New Vision, distanced itself from one of the two people who voted on its behalf during the elections. The club wrote a letter to the BAA expressing its unhappiness over the issue.

The association will be out to limit damage during the much-awaited meeting because several thorny issues are likely to crop up. Anger within the national association is particularly acute following the suspension of the spokesman, Glody Dube. The former 800m hero was handed his suspension letter on Tuesday for allegedly speaking out-of-turn in the media following the country's poor performance at the Africa Junior Athletics Championships (AJAC). Dube intimated that he would fight the association's decision to suspend him as he feels it is unfair.
