Toyota finally wins desert race

KUMAKWANE: Thirteen years of heartbreak for Japanese carmaker Toyota in the annual Toyota Kalahari 1,000 kilometre desert race came to an end yesterday with Duncan Vos/Robert Howie and Anthony Taylor/ Chris Birkin of team Castrol Toyota finishing first and second respectively to earn top honors in the only marathon event of the ABSA off road championship.

Booed by back-to-back victories prior to the weekend event the Toyota Hilux dominated the race from day one despite not having secured a pole start in the Friday Donaldson prologue.

It was sweet victory for the Toyota crew and local fans gathered at the finish line seeing the two Toyotas coming roaring ahead of everyone else only separated by a second. Vos completed the race with a time of 13:31:55 followed closely by Taylor on 13:32:30, while Christiaan Du Ployy/ Henk Janse Van Vuuren came third in the production vehicle category with a time of 13:47:40 in a BMW X3. Third overall behind Vos and Taylor was Evan Hutchison /Danie Stassen in a BAT Venom sand master finishing with a time of 13:44:48.
