The Botswana Softball Association (BSA) president Marumo Morule has warned that the use of the phrase 'post-match penalties in softball to refer to the extension of a game is wrong and misleading. He said the right phrase is 'tiebreaker'.

"There are no penalties in a game of softball," he said. His comments come in the wake of the common use of the word penalties in the just-ended Oseg-AP Mokoto Diamond Classic softball tournament.

Many people used the word to refer to an extension of a game to determine a winner in case of a deadlock. Though the use of the word seems common among softballers, Morule said it is unacceptable. Normally a tiebreaker will be applied when teams are level on runs at the top of 8th inning. He explained that the teams will each be given one chance to register more runs to determine a winner. However, in a case where both teams fail to register more runs, the game will go on provided there is time until there is a winner. The difference between a normal game and a tiebreaker is that a player who was last on bat in the last inning will not bat and will start the inning from the second base. This is done to reduce time and quicken play.
