The untold story of softball

Botswana has recorded much success in softball, yet as Correspondent MOSAH MOKGANEDI finds out, it all boils down to the inspiration a foreign student got from insults

When other students at the Tigerkloof University in South Africa ridiculed, Andrew Mokoto, for chasing the air and likened him to an uncivilised bush boy, they were definitely not aware what great things their mockery would cause. The South African, picked on Mokoto because he is an athlete - a runner. It was a blessing in disguise for Botswana and its student in South Africa. He abandoned athletics and switched to the 'more civilised' softball. It was not an easy decision because it was made under duress. However, he will never regret it. One thing led to another and in 1973, Mokoto and others formed the first softball team in Botswana.

Two years later, he helped found the Botswana Softball Association (BSA). It was tough forming the first softball team. Mokoto and a few colleagues remained focused and soldiered on when others gave up. Their dream was to see softball grow to the next level. Probably what makes Mokoto to stand out is that he is the only player of his generation who is still active in the game. If it were a night dream, definitely he would not want to wake up and if he was to die tomorrow, he will depart a very happy man. He remains the only player of his generation who still attends softball games. That means he is perhaps, the oldest spectator at softball matches.
