The stars of the title race

Gaborone United (GU) ended a successful chase for the be MOBILE Premier League title after 19 years of drought through a combination of individual brilliance and a high level of team work.

While their main rivals and past immediate champions, Mochudi Centre Chiefs was overflowing with talent, the Reds relied on an outstanding performance by a core group of eight players to become the first winners of the P1 million title.    In midfield, debutant Ofentse Nato shone like a beacon and stood his ground against seasoned campaigners.

The gangly defensive midfielder was in a class of his own and was rewarded with a national team call-up. He can pass effectively with both foot particularly long diagonal balls. Ronald Chikomo was the club's top goal scorer and his hard running caused opposition defenders headaches. The dreadlocked Zambian striker netted 18 times and was pivotal in the Reds' success. Although Sageby Sandaka was a pale shadow of the player who took the league by storm in his debut season, he was still instrumental in the title race and was a vital member of the squad. The Zimbabwean scored a double against Mogoditshane Fighters at a time when the pressure was mounting on GU as Chiefs were closing in. Sandaka's countryman, Itai Gwandu was a calming influence at the back. He took off from where he left last season and was probably the Reds' most consistent player. Gwandu is equally at home in a defensive midfield role. Captain Joseph Phetogo provided good leadership especially when GU seemed vulnerable. He is a steady defender with the experience garnered while playing in South Africa. Although susceptible against silver quick forwards, Phetogo played well in general. In midfield, Tshepo 'Schoolboy' Molefe provided the creativity and played better than last season. Molefe, who at one stage was sidelined by injury, did well for a GU side lacking a genuine playmaker. Branco Molekwane had a storming season at left back keeping Boniface Makolo on the bench.
