The good, the bad and the ugly of soccer

The highlights of local soccer in 2009 are easily the exploits of Gaborone United (GU) in the be MOBILE Premier League and Uniao Flamengo Santos in the Coca-Cola Cup.

Off the pitch, the main news was the appointment of Shaw Kgathi as the new Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture and the suspension of Botswana Football Association (BFA) chief executive officer, Mooketsi 'Tosh' Kgotlele. Then there was the saga of the be MOBILE Premier League promotion play-offs that saw Mogoditshane Fighters relegated and punished after match-fixing allegations.

GU became the toast of local soccer front, snatching the league title from bitter rivals, Mochudi Centre Chiefs in July. The Reds won their first national title in 19 years after losing only once the whole season. As expected, their coach, Mike Sithole, captain, Joseph Phethogo and Ofentse 'Size-10' Nato swept the honours at the be MOBILE Premier League awards. Sithole was named coach of the year for the second year running, while Phethogo was crowned player the season and walked away with a P50,000 price award.
