The day Gunners rolled into town

SELEBI-PHIKWE: It was billed to be a season closing epic encounter. It was a game that featured two teams fighting for a top four finish and two players battling it out for the Golden Boot Award.

Soccer fans could not have asked for a more perfect ending to the season than Saturday's duel between two rejuvenated sides, Nico United and crowd-pullers Extension Gunners. The two teams responded with a blend of exciting football, complimented by unrivalled commitment and in the end Nico runaway 2-0 winners. While focus was on joint leading goalscorer Master Masitara and third-place Tiroyamodimo 'TRX' Mohambi to increase their tallies, the night belonged to Eric Molebatsi, Thobo 'Fish' Kgoboge and Ofentse Mmipi.

While the game in itself was a thriller, the build-up was equally captivating. As early as 11am, the town was abuzz with both sets of supporters showing their colours, hooting and sparking premature celebrations. The mood reached fever pitch as the scheduled 7pm kick-off time neared. A convoy of vehicles, including one busload, snaked its way into the usually sleepy mining town. Loud noises could be heard from vuvuzelas in all parts of the town. The Gunners' supporters enjoyed numerical advantage over their Nico counterparts. There were minor skirmishes of rival supporters clashing before the game as was during the exciting encounter.
