Struggling Gunners seek to stem tide against Hogs

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Struggling Eastern Military Garrison (EMG) Gunners face a difficult task tomorrow when they visit defending champions, Gaborone Hogs.

Though they were champions in 2009, Gunners are finding the going tough so far with only two wins and one draw after five matches. Last weekend, they were given a 36-13 hiding by UB Rhinos.  After a promising start to the season, they are heading in the wrong direction in the league table and now lie fifth with 13 points from five games. Despite the struggle, Gunners' spokesperson, Modesto Mazambe is confident that his side will beat Hogs tomorrow. He said they managed to beat the champions twice last season and there is nothing that can stop them from pulling another win. He appreciated that most of Hogs' players are in the national team but said that that does not scare his side."Playing Hogs is a motivation on its own. We have played them before and we know their style. We know that they are quick to exchange the ball and close the gaps. We have been working on that this week. We have also been working on the rags because we know that they are also dangerous in that department," he explained. Mazambe said Gunners have been training without a coach following the departure of Neal Gouws.

He stated that assistant coach, Tosca Segaise, is in the United Kingdom. He said their focus is putting their league campaign back on track. He admitted that it has been difficult for the side to gel since the beginning of the season. Gunners have been boosted by the arrival of Lama Simon, who has not played since the beginning of the season. However, they will miss Tlatso Gosiame who picked an injury against Rhinos, while Keatametse Mapodise is on suspension following last weekend's dismissal. Mazambe said Gunners are contesting the red card given to captain Kagiso Ditsebe for pushing Rhinos' coach, Sean Irish. "Irish was not on the field. The Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) was supposed to have attended to the matter within a week but that has not happened," he said.
