Standard Bank sponsors Independence Open

The annual Standard Chartered Bank Independence Open Golf tournament took place last weekend at the Gaborone Golf Club.

About 200 players took part in the event that had a women section for the second year running.

Standard Bank head of consumer banking, Michael Wiegand said the relationship between the bank and the tournament has been sustained for decades. "We have been sponsoring the tournament since its inception 42 years ago and we are proud to be an integral part of this Open, that marks the Independence of Botswana. There are always familiar faces in the line up, or behind the scenes but every year sees new entrants, and this is part of the plan: to bring the game of golf to as many people as possible. We hope to see an increase in youth participation in this tournament as time goes on. Separate from the actual Independence Open but at the same time marking Botswana's Independence Day, Standard Chartered Bank also annually donates to the Youth Golf League, to assist with the development of the game among Botswana's young people."
