The Sports Volunteer Movement (SVM) unveiled its new executive committee to the media yesterday, with the immediate task to revive the movement.

Speaking at the launch in Gaborone yesterday, Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng said it is important that SVM refocuses especially in that more responsibilities for BNSC are on the way. He revealed that the government is mulling over seeding the stadiums to the BNSC. He also said the government is also working towards giving BNSC the responsibility of running the centres of excellence. “We are also interested in hosting the 2019 All Africa Games,” he said. He said with all these responsibilities, the SVM has to be very active.

He added that in the past, SVM has focused solely on finding and retaining the volunteers outside, but should now also look at those within the codes themselves. He said the major challenge in retaining volunteers has been the issue of incentives. He said it is difficult to come up with competitive incentives for volunteers because of a shortage of sponsorships. He added that the little they get from government and some sponsors is usually channelled to some activities, while only the volunteers get a smaller fraction.
