The new Sports Act expected to go before parliament this month has slowed down the appointment of a new Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) chief executive officer (CEO).

According to sources, the new BNSC CEO, believed to be former Debswana communications director, Jacob Sesinyi was supposed to start work today (Friday). However, the appointment has been delayed as the Sports Act, which will result in structural changes at the BNSC, goes before parliament during the current sitting.

The Sports Act, once it gets thumbs up in parliament, will see the BNSC and the Department of Sports and Recreation (DSR) merge in a bid to cut on role duplication. It will also reduce turf wars as the two sports bodies crossed paths in the past. The Botswana National Olympics Committee, a third sports body, will remain independent. The BNOC, THE DSR and the BNSC have often been seen as battling for supremacy with calls for role clarity among the three.
