Sport events run smoothly despite strike

Despite a crippling civil servants' strike, Botswana hosted two major sporting events without a hitch.

There were fears that the strike might impact adversely on the Zone IV Elite Boxing Championships and the Africa Junior Athletics Championships, which ended in Gaborone on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The public made suggestions during a local radio phone-in programme that the two events be postponed on fear that if athletes sustain life-threatening injuries, they would not receive treatment as medical workers are on strike.

But after a big week for Botswana sport, the country emerged with full honours as the two events were largely successful. Africa Junior Athletics Championships (AJAC) Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng, said the championships went well, adding that 30 percent of volunteers were civil servants.
