The Gaborone qualifiers over the weekend

The organisers of the annual pool tournament say sponsors continue to snub the competition. The tournament, which started last year as Earth Life Africa’s idea, has seen pool resuscitated in various parts of the country.

The tournament organiser, Lizzy Maila told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they have tried to seek assistance from a number of companies, but in vain. She said despite that, they decided to go ahead with the tournament. She said they have already held qualifying games in various areas such as Letlhakane, Molepolole, Mahalapye and over the weekend the games were in Gaborone.

“The attendance has been low. We expect the numbers to increase as time goes on. In some areas, people still regard snooker as a bar sport and they shun it,” she revealed. Maila said as the organisers, it is their mandate to change that line of thinking. She said pool has the potential to become one of the best sporting codes in the country. She said there are many people, both young and old who enjoy battling it out on the pool table.  Maila said it is rare to find an entertainment area without a pool table.
