Southern Open Darts tourney attracts huge field

The annual Southern Open Darts tournament, to be held in Gaborone tomorrow, has attracted 110 players from across the country.

Botswana Darts Association (BODA) tournament director, Ben Tshaba Moilwe, said the event, which is in its fifth year, has drawn 72 players from the south and 38 from the north. The tournament will be held at the Village Prisons Hall. Moilwe told Mmegi Sport that the tournament has grown in stature since the inaugural edition in 2006.

All the 12 clubs from the southern region and eight from the north will send representatives. Both men and women will contest in the singles, doubles and team categories. Moilwe said there will be a separate singles competition for Under-18 boys and girls. The best junior players will be used as ambassadors during coaching clinics and workshops with the top three players walking away with P150, P100 and P50 in prize money respectively.
 
The winner in the senior men's category will get P900. The runners-up pocket P400 while the third-placed player receives P200. In the women's section, the winner gets P400 with the runner-up walking away with P200. The third-placed player will receive P100. Moilwe said all but two national team players will participate in tomorrow's event.
