Southern African clubs continue to sing blues in CAF competition

A north or West African club is almost guaranteed to win this year's CAF Champions League title as southern African clubs flounder once again. South African giants, Orlando Pirates triumph in 1995 remains the only Champions League win for southern Africa.

Zimbabwean side, Dynamos came agonisingly close to adding a second for the region in 1998 when they lost to ASEC Mimosas from Ivory Coast, the club that was beaten by Pirates in 1995.

This year, southern Africa's hopes were on Zimbabwe's Monomotapa and Zesco United of Zambia. Zesco and Monomotapa's dreams of progressing to the semi-finals of the lucrative competition that carries a $1million first prize went up in smoke over the weekend. Zesco fell 3-2 to Nigeria's Kano Pillars away to crash out of the running for a semi-final place with a game to go in Group A. Kano Pillars and Sudan's Al-Hilal, both with 10 points have qualified for the semi-finals in the group.
