Softball league rolls without a sponsor

The Botswana Softball Association (BSA) has failed to secure sponsorship for the annual national league for the third consecutive year. The league is scheduled to start on March 17. Till 2004, the competition was sponsored by Kgalagadi Breweries Ltd. The president of BSA, Marumo Morule, said the league is going to run with or without a sponsor.

He said they are currently signing agreements with the BSA affiliates to play a non-sponsored league. The softball boss pointed out that they decided to run the league to keep the clubs fit for international competitions. He said failure to get a sponsor should not be looked at as a failure of BSA as every sport is struggling on this front. Since the end of the KBL sponsorship, the BSA has been on the verge of clinching several deals but Morule said in many cases they could not agree terms with their potential sponsors.

"If somebody wants to sponsor you with P10,000 you might as well resort to a non- sponsored league because the difference is not much," he told Mmegi Sport yesterday.
He believes the sponsorship should benefit both the sponsor and the sponsored. He says that in as much as sponsors expect to get mileage, the sponsorship should be equivalent to the size of the league.
