Slow registration for inaugural beach volleyball

The Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) has expressed hope that the slow registration for its 'beach' volleyball tournament this weekend will pick-up.

BVF sports development administration officer Boitshwarelo Motlogelwa said yesterday that though the response to the Saturday event is low, they expect to register the expected 50 players and more.

By Tuesday, less than 20 players had registered for the tournament. At least 20 people had called BVF to ask about the event. Motlogelwa said the slow response might be because beach volleyball is new in Botswana. He asserted that registration would continue until the day of the event. He said the event at the Ozone Nightclub in Tlokweng is open to everybody including people who are not currently active in volleyball.
The tournament is a joint venture between BVF and Ozone Nightclub. Motlogelwa said preparations for the event are at an advanced stage and the sand has already been dumped at the venue. He is optimistic that the tournament will live up to expectations and prove that beach volleyball can be played even where there are no beaches. He urged spectators to come in large numbers to witness the first ever beach volleyball tournament in the country.
