Francistown outfit Scramblers were crowned Shell Softball League champions after beating BDF IX 3-2 in a closely-contested final played at the National Diamond yesterday.

Eric Simwanza got the only home run of the game in the bottom one inning to thrust them ahead before first base man, Oteng Modise got another run to make it 3-0. The three bottom one runs were all Scramblers needed to wrest the title from BDF as they thwarted all their efforts to level terms in the following innings. Earlier in the day, BDF had lost 10-1 to Scramblers and looked a bit cautious, perhaps because of the morning drubbing. BDF's top two inning was disastrous, but their opponents also failed to take advantage when it was their time to bat. The closest they came was when Simwanza was in second base, while Witness Garogwe was on third. However, Gaomodimo Kgomotso was taken out on four strikes. The soldiers only got their first inning in the top three after a Scramblers fielder fumbled on Neo Mngqoamisa's fly ball, allowing him to surge to second base. A subsequent Obusitswe Lekgothu fly ball saw him complete a run to make it 3-1. In a show of lack of confidence in themselves, BDF walked Simwanza, scorer of the only home run, thrice.

With bases full in the bottom four, Scramblers failed to stretch their lead with Tumelo Kenakae out on four strikes. Scramblers held on to their slender 3-1 up to bottom five. They made a positional switch with Simwanza pitching. The move did not help much as BDF managed to score a run through substitute, Mothusi Shalobane to make it 3-2. Scramblers had a chance to kill it as a contest in the bottom six inning, but they failed to wrap it up. BDF could have drawn level in the top seven inning with the scores on 3-2, but Lekgothu's fly ball was caught. With two man down, Shalobane's outfield ball caught ending the game 3-2. For winning the championship, Scramblers walked away with P15, 000, gold medals and a trophy, while BDF got P12, 000. The prize giving ceremony will be on May 24.
