Santana gets full support

JOHANNESBURG: The waiting is finally over as the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup gets underway in South Africa this Sunday. Ahead of the eagerly-awaited tournament, hosts South Africa got a much-needed boost when they beat Poland 1-0 in an international friendly at the Orlando Stadium last Saturday.

The win reduced the pressure on Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana who was highly criticised by some quarters after announcing his 23-man squad last Thursday. Some South African football fans told Mmegi Sport that they were not happy the coach left out Spanish-based defender Nasief Morris. They pointed out that Morris was one of the most experienced defenders in the country and the team needs his services. But Santana said at an emotional media briefing that Morris' dropping was an internal matter that he was not willing to discuss with the press. It is understood that Morris was dropped because of disciplinary reasons after he reported for camp a day past the deadline. After the win against Poland at the weekend, Santana can now heave a sigh of relief as Morris' absence was not noticed with Matthew Booth and Aaron Mokoena partnering well in central defence. South Africa faces Iraq at the Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Sunday in the opening game of the Confederations Cup in Group A. The other countries in the group are European champions Spain and New Zealand, the Oceania champions.

Interestingly, some of the renowned South African journalists are fully behind Santana.
