Sandaka Sinks Gunners

Gaborone United (GU) avenged the first round defeat to Lobtrans Gunners when they crashed the Reds 2-0 in a Mascom Premier League game at the National Stadium on Thursday night. Gunners defeated Moyagoleele by a solitary goal in the first round of the campaign in November last year.

The Gaborone giants are now climbing up the league table while Gunners are sliding once again to the relegation zone. GU are sixth with 32 points from 22 games while Gunners are 10th on the table with 25 points from the same number of games. Despite struggling in the first round of the campaign, the arrival of Zimbabwean coach Luke Masomere seems to have done wonders for GU. The Reds are currently playing very good football.
From the first whistle, it was clear that it was going to be an exciting encounter and GU striker, Sageby Sandaka showed his class when he put the Reds ahead in the first minute. A quick interchange of passes between GU players saw Sandaka through and the Zimbabwean international hit a powerful shot to beat Gunners' goalkeeper, Israel Molao.
The superb goal made GU more hungrier and Sandaka nearly scored his second goal two minutes later after Gunners' defenders failed to make a decisive clearance. Disaster was averted when Gunners' goalkeeper proved equal to the task. Gunners' players showed glimpses of brilliance but were let down by poor finishing and lack of urgency with top striker, System Mubi neutralised by GU captain, Joseph Phetogo.
Gunners' Ofentse Mmipi set up Mogorosi Magetse but the youngster missed the target by a whisker. Courtesy of the wizardry of Kgosiemang Ngwako, the lightening bursts of lanky midfielder, Itayi Gwandu and the awareness of Molefe who seems to be enjoying his football once again, the Reds were in their element. In the second half both teams took the game by the scruff of the neck and Sandaka failed to beat advancing goalkeeper after being put through by his striking partner, Edmore Mufema in the 57th minute. But he increased his tally 15 minutes later after a quick interchange between him and Mufema.
In a post match interview, GU coach, Luke Masomere praised his players for their good and disciplined performance.
He revealed that their strategy to catch Gunners on the counter worked well. "We managed to deny them any dangerous movements and then attacked them with speed because we knew their defence is not that tough," he said.
