South African Breweries (SAB) has announced that it will end its sponsorship for the regional COSAFA Castle Cup this year. The 11-year relationship will end after the COSAFA Castle Cup final in September. The tournament was sponsored through SAB's Castle Lager, Africa's most popular beer.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been reports that SAB will not continue with the sponsorship as they want to focus on other things, especially the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The reports were finally confirmed on Monday by SAB. The announcement came days after veteran Lesotho striker, Lebajoa Mphongoa, pleaded with SAB to continue sponsoring the tournament as it has been a good hunting ground for most players in the region.

Speaking at a press conference at the Gaborone Sun last Friday, Mphongoa said: "Most of our players are not working and the incentives they get from COSAFA Castle Cup are helpful. I would also like to urge Castle to spread its wings to various leagues," he said.
In a statement posted through COSAFA website, SAB said that they are delighted with the results from the sponsorship over the years.
