SA pips Botswana in athletics meet

South Africa emerged overall winners of the biannual Southern Senior Athletics Championships held in Gaborone over the weekend after reaping 12 gold out of the 26 medals they amassed. Botswana finished second with the highest number of medals.

The hosts got 36 medals but could not finish top after narrowly missing out on gold medals count. South Africa managed 12 gold medals, one better than Botswana, which ensured the neighbouring giants finished first. Namibia finished third position in a competition which drew 11 southern African countries. The Botswana team put up an impressive performance particularly in the 4x1 and the 4x4 relay teams. The presence of Senegal-based athletes Amantle Montsho and Isaac Makwala added bite to the host team.
