Rude welcome for Premier League rookies

Premier League rookies, Killer Giants and Motlakase received a baptism of fire in their debut over the weekend. Motlakase got a 4-2 drubbing at the hands of Nico United while Killer Giants were walloped 4-0 by Uniao Flamengo Santos in Lobatse.

The other Premier League newcomer, Jwaneng Comets, defeated BMC 1-0.  Comets have been in the Premier League before while Motlakase and Killer Giants are making their maiden appearances in top-flight soccer. Killer Giants' public relations officer, Offmann Montsiemang said the defeat is a wake up call. He said their players suffered from stage fright. "We did not play our usual game.  The Premier League is a different ball game altogether," he said.

Montsiemang said they have realised that in the Premier League, mistakes are punished. He said Killer Giants lost to a good side that has just won the Coca-Cola Cup.He expressed confidence that his team will not relegate despite losing the first game.  "We will manage with the material that we have," Montsiemang said. He added that they have acquired two players with Premier League experience from Police XI.Other new recruits are goalkeeper Keobakile Isaacs and left-winger Topo Piet from BMC. Piet missed a penalty against Santos and Montsiemang came to his defence, saying he cannot be singled out for blame.  He said all the players were not settled in the game. He asserted that it is crucial for the club to forget about the weekend performance and focus on the future. "I think our Francistown game (against TAFIC) will be much different with better results.  I hope the players will be able to settle," he said. Motlakase coach, Benedict Bayani said they are not devastated by the loss to Nico.  "Our first game was just a chapter in a book. It is not the end," he said.
