Rooney doubtful for England games

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is doubtful for England's autumn Euro 2008 qualifiers after suffering a hairline fracture of his left foot. Rooney was injured in Sunday's goalless Premier League opener with Reading. United have put no timescale on the injury but early estimates suggest he faces at least six to eight weeks out.

Rooney, 21, missed three months after a foot injury in 2004 and a similar lay-off would rule him out of England's five remaining Euro 2008 qualifiers. He is all but certain to miss England's friendly against Germany at Wembley next Wednesday. And coach Steve McClaren will already be concerned about whether the forward will be fit for the matches at home to Israel on 8 September and then Russia four days later.  McClaren's side also face further key qualifiers in October, with Estonia the visitors on 13 October before an away match in Russia on 17 October.

Rooney suffered his latest injury when Reading defender Michael Duberry accidentally stood on his foot towards the end of the first half of the match at Old Trafford. Although United boss Sir Alex Ferguson initially played down the seriousness of the injury, a scan confirmed the fracture.
