Rollers lose Orange case

Township Rollers have failed in their bid to use the Orange Botswana logo in their playing kits during Mascom Premier League matches. The Gaborone giants suffered the setback after the Botswana Football Association (BFA) Disciplinary Committee (DC) ruled against them.

Rollers have been prevented from using the Orange logo because the Premier League is sponsored by Orange's long time rival in the mobile phone industry, Mascom Wireless Botswana. In its ruling, the DC found that Rollers were informed about the relationship between the BFA and Mascom and the related obligations of clubs playing in the Premier League. "..Meetings were held to address issues pertaining to the sponsorship and Township Rollers were invited to those meetings.

If Township Rollers was not able to attend the meetings, it was their responsibility to find out what the meeting was about," said DC chairperson, Thato Mmile. She said her committee found that the requirement for exclusivity in the BFA-Mascom sponsorship contract is not unreasonable under circumstances. "It is trite that any party providing sponsorship does it for a number of reasons and for commercial entities, sponsorship is provided as a marketing tool for that company such that it would be unreasonable to provide a direct competitor similar visibility," she said.
