Rising tennis star qualifies for Africa Junior Championship

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Botswana's South Africa based rising tennis sensation, Innocent Tidimane has qualified for the Africa Junior Championships to be played in Nairobi, Kenya, next March.

Tidimane told Mmegi Sport during his visit to his home town, Selebi-Phikwe this week that he managed to qualify for the tournament after playing well during a Zonal tournament played early this month in Namibia. He said that in December he participated in an International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament held in Mombasa, Kenya. He explained that in the first match, in the singles, he lost in the second round and doubles he lost in the third round. In another match the youngster was kicked out in the first round but managed to reach quarterfinals in doubles.

Tidimane said he will be starting intensive training this week when he returns to the High Performance Centre in Pretoria where he is based. The 15- year-old tennis player relocated to South Africa in 2010 after getting an ITF scholarship. This after impressing ITF scouts when he represented Botswana during the Under-12 tournament in South Africa in 2009.  The Selebi-Phikwe born tennis star managed to pass the trials to secure a full scholarship. He is the second player from Botswana to be admitted to the centre.
