UB Rhinos did not let the off-field issues hamper their on-field task as they narrowly beat Canon Jaguars 17-15 in an intense Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) league opener played at the Jaguars grounds on Saturday afternoon. Rhinos coach, Munya Mhonda resigned last week citing internal politics as the reason he quit the job.

However under the tutelage of new coach Mooketsi Ramakele, the team got off to a shaky start as their defence had difficulties in dealing with a youthful Jaguars’ side. The Jaguars showed signs of tactical indiscipline as they failed to capitalise from the unsettled Rhinos back line. They only scored a single try taking an 8-5 lead to the half time.

From the start of the second half, Rhinos looked rejuvenated, looking to put the coach’s instructions into practice. The visitors took the lead 10 minutes into the second half after scoring their try of the game, but failed to score a conversion taking the lead to 10-8. The Jaguars however managed to score their second try of the game although showing glimpses of lack of experience as they gave away fouls, with two of their players being sent off.
