Referees Will Not Benefit From New Fines - BFA

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) has denied reports that it wants to use the newly introduced fines for errant players and officials to boost referees' allowances. BFA spokesperson, Phakamile Kraai said last week that the money will be used to run the Premier League and the First Division.

Previously, BFA said the fines were meant to curb indiscipline among players and officials during matches. Despite the explanations, reports say that the money will be used to pay the referees who have been complaining about low allowances. There are fears that if the allegations are true, then the referees will just flash cards knowing that they will benefit from the fines paid by the punished officials and players.

The situation is complicated by the fact that so far, there is no review committee to decide whether some of the cards were rightly issued by referees. As a result, there have been calls for a mechanism to deal with errant referees.
