Red Lions fall on hard times

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Second Division side, Red Lions is facing a bleak future. The Selebi-Phikwe side was relegated from the First Division at the end of last season after a woeful performance.

In some instances, Red Lions failed to honour  fixtures leading to heightened speculation regarding its future. The club which at one stage was tipped to make it to the Premier league has seen its fortunes dwindle in the past season and now have to fight hard to get back to the First Division. Four seasons ago, Red Lions caused a major upset in the Coca-Cola Cup, tossing out Premier League side, Notwane. Many had expected the club to build on the success as it had good players. But somehow, the Lions faltered badly despite the fact that it had the likes of national team player, Abueng 'Stone' Dijogadifele and Selopa 'Jesus' Segoea. Most of the good players have left as the club's fortunes dwindled.

Despite the challenges, coach Shimani 'Shine' Kgomotsego is determined to revive the club. The coach who doubles as the club administrator believes Red Lions will turn the corner. He said lack of commitment from some committee members is behind the club's poor showing last season. Kgomotsego said the immediate task is to galvanise support from committee members before the club can strategise on the way forward. "It is always a struggle for us to meet as committee members. Once I get the members to commit themselves to the club, we will be back on track," Kgomotsego said. He added that other Second Division clubs do not pose a serious threat to them and once they get their act together, it will not be difficult to bounce back to the First Division.
