Proverbial monkey clings to BFA's back

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) has been fire fighting for ages, but as Staff Writer, MQONDISI DUBE observes, the proverbial monkey on the association's back can only climb down if president David Fani steps out of his cocoon

Botswana Football Associatin's president, Fani talks slowly, he chooses his words carefully. He is a soft-spoken character who is far from aggressive. But Fani must swing into action and abandon his diplomatic approach following recent events, which have left the BFA fighting for its redemption. Speed and aggression need to be added to his talk and action. It would definitely take a swift Fani to turn the tide at Lekidi Centre. The association has failed to solve controversial issues, attracting negative headlines every week. Fani and his executive have remained calm in the face of growing criticism. He has been described as a calculating yet slow individual, but that strategy is clearly not working. The BFA is said to be teetering on the brink of bankruptcy following reports that its coffers are running empty.

The problems are mounting and becoming prominent everyday and it seems it's a Zebras' curse. Since the national team qualified for the AFCON finals, Fani and company have never known peace, constantly repelling potentially fatal blows. The latest episode in the seemingly unending saga came on Wednesday. Amid the euphoria of a new P16. 6 million sponsorship deal between Orange and BFA, All Kasi were the ultimate party poopers. The former Zebras' technical sponsor caught BFA napping with a statement that all, but ends whatever association existed between the two. All Kasi ordered that money raised from replica jersey sales - amounting to P700, 000, should be given to players and not anything to do with financing the BFA budget deficit. The BFA would rightly feel increasingly isolated with a plebiscite looming in August.
