Pro-boxing title fight coming?

Plans are underway to bring the first ever professional boxing title fight to Botswana by December this year. After successfully hosting a professional boxing event earlier this year, former pugilist Thuso Khubamang told Mmegi Sport that he is working with his South African and local partners to bring the first title fight to Botswana.

This could be good news to South African-based Motswana boxer, Kgotla Baeti, who is itching for a title fight.  "He is ready for a title fight but he cannot achieve his dream in South Africa because he is not a South African. It is only if Botswana stages such an event that Baeti could realise his dream," explained Khubamang, the first professional boxer from Botswana. He stated that the South African promoters he is in touch with know Baeti. "They have been encouraging us to do something for the boxer because they feel he will not disappoint. He is one of the best in his division but he is not South African," Khubamang emphasised.

He revealed that he has teamed up with Gaborone businessman, Steve Raman, who owns  four night clubs in the city, as a partner in the bid to bring the first title fight to Botswana. "I will be taking him to South Africa soon so he can acquaint himself with the way of doing things in professional boxing. It is my job to train people like him and other officials prior to the big event," Khubamang said on Friday. Raman, whose Gaborone West Club once hosted an amateur boxing tournament, confirmed that he is trying to put together a massive event with the former boxer. "It is too early to comment on that because there is still a lot of planning that we are doing at the moment. But something is cooking and we hope to make it a successful event that everyone would be proud of," said the man who has previously sponsored Dintwa Sloca for fights in South Africa and Namibia.
