Pride at stake in city derby

Fast-improving Gaborone United (GU) host traditional rivals, Notwane in a Mascom Premier League game at the National Stadium on Sunday. After a seemingly unending series of poor results early in the season, GU have polished their act and redeemed their dented pride.

Currently, they are sixth in the log with 38 points from 24. Though Notwane and GU are not in the running for the Premier League title, their clash tomorrow cannot be taken lightly. Both sides know that a loss will be a serious dent on pride and hence maximum premium would be put on victory. GU come into the derby after beating Mochudi Centre Chiefs 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon while Notwane were made to travel to Molepolole Sports Complex, only to be told that their opponents Prisons XI have not been informed about the game.

In the first round, Notwane suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of a then struggling GU in a midweek game played at UB Stadium. Since then, GU have improved tremendously and Notwane might find it difficult to exact revenge. But this does not mean that Toronto can be written off as they are capable of pulling a surprise result. The fact that the game is a derby might be enough to motivate Notwane to go for broke.
