Phikwe clubs stand on quicksand

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The words 'win' and 'desperate' have of late become synonymous with football conversations in Selebi-Phikwe. This is because all the four leading clubs from the copper-nickel mining town are staring relegation in the face and must overhaul their acts to survive. Nico United and FC Satmos in the Mascom Premier League and Mosquito and Red Lions in the Med Rescue First Division North League are all haunted by relegation.

Nico is currently 12th - two places above the relegation zone - with 25 points from 25 games while Satmos is rock-bottom with 16 points from 22 games in the 16-team league.
So what went wrong? Nico United spent the better of the season hobbled with injuries. The club struggled to keep a full squad as influential players like skipper Eric Molebatsi and marksman Monametsi 'Sunday' Kelebale played on and off due to injuries. They suffered a major blow when they lost one of their prolific strikers in Tamocha Bedi to TAFIC. To make matters worse, Nico faced problems at the coaching level. First Majombolo hired one Peter Sakonda but soon, it was realised that he could not crack it. The club took long before sending Sakonda packing and roping in Johannes Tshuma who has not really proved himself.

As for Satmos, internal politics and lack of a sponsor have been the major weaknesses. The tussle for power at the club affected players and the situation was compounded by the withdrawal of the sponsorship of Letsweletse Tangane of Bamangwato Coach Tours. Eventually the club was 'privatised' and given to former coach Mooketsi 'China' Mading on a temporary basis.
