Paltry crowds at Phikwe play-offs

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Paltry crowds turned up to watch the Premier League promotion play-offs played over the weekend.

In the first game on Friday night, very few fans braved the chilly evening to watch Prisons XI and Miscellaneous battle to a 1-1 draw. Only a handful of BDF XI supporters were visible during the game against Prisons XI on Saturday. On Sunday, less than 100 fans turned up for the dead rubber between BDF XI and Miscellaneous. Some fans who spoke to Mmegi Sport, felt the relatively high gate charges of P20 kept people away from the stadium in a match that had no importance.

"All the teams taking part in the  play-offs are not from Phikwe and, therefore, do not command much support here. The gate charges should have been lowered in order to attract fans," one fan said. He argued that the gate charges were pegged at the same rate as that of Premier League games yet the teams were (at the time) battling for promotion to the top league. "These teams cannot be classified as Premier League teams since they were fighting to get into the top league. Instead, they should be treated as Division One teams until they are promoted," the fan argued. Some fans said that to watch the three games, one needed P60, but it is difficult for most people to fork out such money in the middle of the month.
