When Botswana's 400m darling, Amantle Montsho made history by becoming the first Motswana woman to appear in a final at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany on Tuesday, there were high hopes that she would earn the country its first major track medal.

The Senegal-based runner went to Berlin as the African champion and lived up to expectations when she became one of the five women to run the 400m in under 50 seconds. This was her second major final after she reached the Olympic final last year, hence she had some experience at this level.

The D-Day came in Berlin and Montsho took to the track alongside seven other female runners from across the world among them, Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu from Great Britain. But for some Batswana, the British was no threat since Montsho had a better time than her in the semis. The main threat, according to pundits, was Sanya Richards from the United States and Jamaicans Sherika Williams and Novlene Williams-Mills. But as it was the case at the Olympics, Montsho was put on lane eight and had a poor start, finishing last again. Montsho recorded 50:65 seconds as compared to the 49:89 in the semi-finals on Sunday. Even Anastasiya Kapachinskaya from Russia who finished behind her in the semis with 50:30 beat her.
