Oatlhotse wins HIV/AIDS chess tourney

Providence Oatlhotse dropped just half a point in seven rounds to win the first ever HIV/AIDS chess tournament. He scored 6.5 points out of a possible seven to relegate fellow Olympiad Moakofi Notha with 5.5 points to second place. Chazha Bontsi, Tunde Akande and Kuda Mbikiwa finished joint third with five points each.

For winning the tournament, Oatlhotse pocketed P300; while Notha received P200 with those on third spot getting P100. For the first time in the history of Botswana chess there was a prize for veteran players, which was awarded to Bontsi. In the primary schools section, Tiroyaone Lentswe, playing in his first ever tournament emerged triumphant after scoring three points.

Twenty six players turned up for the tournament, organised by national team player Kenneth Boikhutswane.
The tournament was played at House of Foods at the Ministry of Health. It marked the first time that a chess event is held in Botswana to commemorate World AIDS Day. Speaking at the start of the tournament, Boikhutswane said chess players, like the rest of the nation, have a responsibility to change their behaviour and be involved in the fight against HIV.
