Notwane host AIDS tournament

Notwane netball club in collaboration with the Botswana Netball Association (BONA) has organised an Under-20 HIV/AIDS youth tournament in Gaborone over the weekend.

The event is intended to spread the anti-HIV/AIDS message in the game. It is another initiative to use sports as a platform to strive for an HIV/AIDS free nation by 2016. The event manager, Kelebogile Mocuminyana said they are out to promote youth development in netball. She added that most of the time, young girls have not been given opportunity to play because experienced players are preferred in competitions.

Six teams will lock horns in the tournament. The teams are Notwane, Moshupa Lovers, Flying Hawks, BDF Cats, Jungle Kings and Phikwe Prisons. Mocuminyana told Mmegi Sport that they invited all the southern teams but they were slow to respond. That is why northern teams were included. She said the sport has not been doing enough to fight HIV/AIDS. "Most of the time we rely on government to do everything for us. We have not been vigilant enough," Mocuminayana said. She urged netball to wake up to the reality of HIV/AIDS. She said there is need for sports to focus on the whole development of a player to produce well-rounded people.
