No security arrangements for Montsho

Following Amantle Montsho's ordeal in Gaborone last week, the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) has said there are no security arrangements for the world 400-metre champion.

Montsho was attacked and robbed of her bag in Gaborone by thugs last week and members of the public are now of the view that she needs security. However, BNOC chief executive officer, Tuelo Serufho, said it was impossible to offer her any security because his organisation does not possess the requisite resources.  He said they are currently in talks with Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) and the Department of Sports and Recreation (DSR) to come up with a long-term solution on how sportsperson can be protected in future. "But in the short term we have nothing in place," he said.

He said provision of security to sportspersons differ from country to country, depending on the availability of resources. "As for us we can only celebrate her achievements, but there is nothing much that we can do to help," he said.  Serufho said their discussions with the BNSC are not limited to issues of security, but the athletes' general welfare as well. "We want to come up with a fully-fledged document on how in future such achievers can be rewarded. Another issue that we are looking at is their welfare and contracts," he said.  He said they are advocating a situation where an athlete would first show the BNOC a copy of their contract before committing.
