No more partying with Mantshwabisi stars

Party animals who have got used to the habit of mingling with Mantshwabisi drivers and crew members at the Lenstweletau over night stop in the last two decades will have no such opportunity this year. The organisers of the motor race have changed plans and now the drivers and crew members will spend the nights mainly at the Grand Palm Hotel in Gaborone.

The move may be a blow to race fanatics though it is a welcome development by the race participants who have in the past complained about a noisy environment when they needed to cool their heads after a long drive through the desert. Cases of vandalism and theft at the racers' camp have been escalating over the years. The man in charge of security at this year's event, Senior Superintendent Engemadzo Sechele of Lobatse said it is important that the drivers have a peace of mind, without worrying about the safety of their property.
"People do not realise that the drivers are the most tired people at the camp site and need a rest, but they would hardly have that rest at the camps with all that noise blaring from the music systems. Now they (drivers) will be spending all their nights in Gaborone at hotels and lodges," he said.  "We have worked out this year's route in such a way that all the laps start and finish in Gaborone to enable the drivers to be able to spend the nights in town. We want people to enjoy the race in a peaceful atmosphere. If the fans did not harass the racers, perhaps they could still enjoy camping nearby," said Sechele who is still busy finalising security measures ahead of the race that starts tomorrow. He added that the annual race is a high profile event.
"It attracts thousands of people, all types of people, and it gives us the opportunity as the police to practice how to deal with some violent situations involving drunkenness by people of all ages. It presents the opportunity to practice to use effectively our resources such as manpower, vehicles, and communication systems, because it is such a big, big event," said Sechele. He stated that he will have his officers deployed at strategic points of the race to ensure safety.
