Njobvu, Mokgacha win Bots closed

Ignatius Njobvu made a rare appearance at a chess event this year and romped away with the Botswana Closed title, edging out favourite, Providence Oathotse despite both players finishing the two day event on 6.5 points apiece.

Njobvu takes the crown and P1.900  thanks to a head to head advantage, having swept aside Oathotse in the second round.

On the women's side Keitumetse Mokgacha proved a hard nut to crack this time around, as she overcame the likes of Boikhutso Mudongo(3rd round), Thapelo Francis(5th round), Ontiretse Sabure(6th  round). However,  Mokgacha had to wait for the last game of the tournament involving  Francis and Gorata Leso, to know her fate. A  Francis victory would have seen those dreams vanish, while a draw or loss  for Francis would have still handed the crown to the veteran member of the Botswana Olympiad team. As it turned out,  Gorata, who finished the tournament fifth, defeated  Francis in a one sided English  Opening based game. In fact Francis  should still have resigned as early as move 24, when Gorata's solid attacking white pieces gained a pawn advantage in advanced areas, a move that saw white crowning and playing with 2 Queens from move 38. In fact white went on to install a third Queen in the game, but for some reason,   Francis still played on until she was checkmated.
