Night games to continue despite power outages

The Premier League Committee (PLC) will continue hosting floodlit games despite the unprecedented power shortages and load shedding.

"We will continue staging night games until the situation becomes worse," said PLC secretary Setete Phuthego. He said though they are aware of the outages, they have to push hard to finish the season on time. The Mascom Premier League second round has just started and Phuthego pointed out that about 30 games would be played at night. "It is said the problem (power shortage) would persist until 2014 but that is very far. Nobody is certain but we have to soldier on," Phuthego told Mmegi Sport. "What if we stop night games and the power does not go off.We would have lost time." He said it is too early to succumb to pressure and they have high hopes that load shedding does not affect the stadiums. He explained that it would be a loss when a game is stopped due to power cuts but at the moment nothing can be done to arrest the problem.

Phutego said night games have become necessary because of lack of playing facilities. He said they do not want clubs to play two games in a weekend because fatigue will set in. He explained that if they cancel floodlight games, their schedule will be affected. The 2007-2008 season is expected to end in May. "We do not have time. The national team has to prepare for 2010 World Cup and our plan is to finish league games before they start preparations, we have to be patriotic," said Phuthego.
