Nico coach departs in unclear circumstances

The contract between Nico United and Zimbabwean coach Luke Masomere has come to a controversial end after the two sides gave contradictory reasons for the termination.

Masomere left the Selebi-Phikwe Premier League side on Friday after a successful five-month stay in which he saved Majombolo from relegation. Nico chairman, Kitso 'Jomo' Nkoborwane maintains that they released Masomere because he had other commitments in his native Zimbabwe, but the coach said they parted ways because of financial reasons. Nkoborwane denied that the club was struggling to pay Masomere's salary. He said the coach was given the job until the end of last season and that is why he has been released.

"It was agreed that he is here until the end of the season as he has other commitments back home," Nkoborwane said. He asserted that the club has never failed to pay the coach.  "I can't comment further on that, but there are records to show that we met our part (regarding payment)," Nkoborwane said. Without giving details he said there were sticking issues in their bid to retain Masomere. He said the club is now looking for a coach and they have already placed adverts in the local press. "We are looking at quality and not nationality," Nkoborwane said. But contrary to what the club chairman is saying, Masomere told Mmegi Sport that he agreed to the termination of his contract after the club struggled to pay him. "There were difficulties in paying my salary particularly in the last two months. We agreed amicably to part ways and there are no hard feelings," Masomere said.
