New Premier League fines meet resistance

The Premier League Committee (PLC) has expressed reservations about a new rule that says players who receive cards during matches must pay fines. The PLC chairperson Mokganedi Molefe said they have written a letter to the Botswana Football Association (BFA) about the matter.

He did not want to discuss the contents of the letter because they have to meet with the BFA first. He said they prefer a tripartite meeting between the PLC, the BFA and referees. But BFA chief executive officer, Mooketsi Kgotlele said Molefe attended last year's meeting where the rule was mooted. He said the new law was not proposed by the BFA but by clubs. The new rule, which became effective on January 1 requires that a Premier League player who gets yellow cards must pay a fine of P50. A red-carded player pays P100, the same amount as a club official who receives a caution. A club official who gets a red card pays P200 fine.

Gaborone United player, Tiroyamodimo 'TRX' Mohambi said there is no need for such fines since local football is not professional. He wondered how players are going to pay the fines because they do not make sufficient money from football. He asserted that some players go for two months without pay. Mohambi said it could only be reasonable if such fines were introduced in a professional set up.
