Neighbours envy Botswana's sports success

Botswana's fast improvement in sports has become the envy of neighbouring countries, a senior sports official has said. Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) chief executive officer, Kagiso Kemoeng, said over the weekend that after the good showing at the recent All African Games (AAG), they have been inundated with calls from neighbouring countries which want to come and learn from Botswana.

"One country wanted to visit us over the long holidays. Our neighbours have observed that over the last 10 years, Botswana sports performance has been improving and they want to know what it is that we are doing right that they are doing wrong. Countries now want to learn from us. It just goes to say something is going right in this country," Kemoeng said at a dinner to honour the AAG team that came back home with 15 medals - six gold - all from track and field events.

However despite the historic medal haul, Kemoeng is convinced facilities still need to be improved across the country for a better performance. He asserted that despite the fact that all the medals came from track and field (games), Botswana's athletics still lack a world standard facility. He said the athletics' track at the national stadium needs to be refurbished. For over 10 years, there has been talk of improving the track and field facilities at the national stadium. On a positive note, Kemoeng said the facilities at Masunga, Serowe and Molepolole Sports complexes are fine for athletics. He said volleyball, badminton and basketball need an in-door playing hall so as to improve. He added that horse-racing need more training stables to improve. He said Botswana horse riders at the AAG became victims of circumstances as some were made to ride unhealthy animals. He said Botswana does not have clay tennis courts and that is why its players failed to perform well at AAG. "We need clay courts. There is this talk every time we need clay courts across the country, minister," he told the minister responsible for sport, Moeng Pheto. Kemoeng requested Pheto to build more swimming pools across the country so that the country can produce many swimmers. He said that boxing, which managed a silver medal at AAG needs a ring. But karate and chess will feel hard done by the BNSC official after he seemed to suggest that the two sports do not need much to progress. "Karate went down (in medal tally), but they can train even under a tree," he said. He added that he was not surprised chess won a medal under the guidance of an inexperienced coach because the game can be played even in the bedroom.
